The Victoria Wine Society is doing something a little different with its last tasting event of the group's fiscal year. They will be tasting an extensive flight of premium sakés from Japan. The tasting takes place at Ambrosia Event Centre, 638 Fisgard St. at 7pm on Monday, January 30. Guest speakers include Barbara Mills and award-winning drinks writer Adem Tepedelen.

Craft Beer Spotlight: Brooklyn Black Ops

Here's a recent arrival that you won't want to miss out on. Black Ops is Brooklyn Brewery's super-rare, oak barrel-aged Imperial Stout. Only 1200 cases of this incredible beer are made annually and we are incredibly lucky to have gotten our hands on one case. Black Ops comes in beautiful 750ml bottles, capped off with Champagne corks. This is an age-worthy beer that if properly cellared will continue to gain in complexity. Ratebeer.com members rated it a perfect 100. At $33 a bottle it's not cheap, but it's definitely in line with a bottle of fine wine that you'd share with someone.

With a cute little pooch like that on the label, how can you say no to a beer like Jolly Pumpkin's Weizen Bam. The iconic Michigan brewery calls this brew a "farmhouse wheat beer," and they describe it as "a hazy golden ale with yeast-driven esters of banana, spicy clove and nutmeg." Our latest arrivals come from Brasserie Fantome, a brewery that merges the rustic saison style with its own whimsical innovations. We now have tickets for the latest Victoria Wine Society tasting—2008 Bordeaux releases—to be held at the Ambrosia Event Centre (638 Fisgard St), Monday, Oct. 24 at 7 pm. As with last year's event, the VWS has decided to double the average price of the wines to be tasted and limit the selection to 10 wines.

We can definitely confirm what the Globe & Mail's Alexandra Gill recently wrote about IPAs: they are the hot seller in the craft beer world. No matter how hoppy or how big, Canadians are developing a taste for bitter beers. Product Spotlight: Deschutes Hop In the Dark

You may have heard about this relatively new emerging beer style called all kinds of wacky things that make no sense, like "black IPA" or "Cascadian dark ale." Our local Phillips even has their own version, Skookum Cascadian Brown, that's available in their Hop Boxes. But our favorite so far is Deschutes' Hop In the Dark, which basically drinks like a nicely hopped version of their delicious Black Butte Porter and, like all Deschutes beers, is made with whole-cone hops. We love this delicious beer, whatever you want to call it, and are happy to be carrying it until it's no longer available a month from now (it's a seasonal offering). Get it while you can.

Product Spotlight: Angelo Gaja Grappa

This is just the kind of interesting, special release that we love: Limited selections of fine grappa from Italy’s most acclaimed wine producer, Angelo Gaja. We have two different offerings and each bottle is 500ml. Here are the details provided by the importer.

Promis: Grappa made from the fresh pomace of Promis, a wine produced at the Cà Marcanda winery in Bolgheri, Tuscany. Fragrant aromas, elegant, clean and fine. Floral essences of geranium, gardenia, with scents of citrus and hay. Seductive for its warm sensation, good structure; intense finish.

The Sperss: Grappa made from the pomace of Nebbiolo grapes from the Sperss vineyard in the commune of Serralunga. Delicate golden colour, with attractive aromas of ripe fruits, hazelnuts and raisins. Good body and a round, full finish.

Great Canadian Beer Festival Ticket Info

Though we won't be selling tickets to the Great Canadian Beer Festival, we know that it's an event that many of our customers look forward to. So, we wanted to help spread the word about how and when tickets can be purchased. The two-day event will take place Friday and Saturday, September 9 and 10, and tickets can only be purchased online via ETIX (so says the GCBF website).

Tickets are the same as last year: Friday is $33.60 with HST and Saturday is $39.20 with HST. There is a $3 charge from ETIX plus $1 for credit card fees. There is a four ticket maximum.

Tickets may be purchased by Visa/MC only - no debit or paypal. Tickets will go on sale at 9am on July 23, and will no doubt sell out very quickly.

A Charles Smith Washington State Red For Under $20!

Charles Smith may not be a household name amongst BC wine drinkers, but the rock star Washington winemaker has quite a rep south of the border for producing bold, brash and beautiful wines under a number of different labels (and price ranges) since the early '00s. His latest effort is a cab-syrah collab with Charles Bieler (Three Thieves) called, what else, Charles & Charles Red, and we've got it for under $20! A total steal for a wine Smith describes on the website as "already shockingly luscious with chewy dark fruit that is hard not to love."

Unibroue Terrible Is Anything But Terrible

Time to brush up on your French. This rarity from Unibroue is called Terrible, but we're supposing that it's not being used here to indicate that this is a lousy beer. We'd say it's probably supposed to mean "super duper," "smashing" or "boss" (all translations provided by Google Translate). At least that's what we think of this fine brew. Don't miss out on this one as it won't be around long. And, we might add, it's a perfect candidate for aging.

It may sound like a rather odd combination, but Mill St. Brewing's Lemon Tea Beer is not only really refreshing, it's a lot drier and more well-balanced than one might imagine such a Snapple-esque brew to be. It's basically a wheat beer with added lemon and two kind of black tea (orange pekoe and earl grey). Hey, brewers mix coffee and espresso into their beers, so why not tea?

Instead of by country, we are now grouping them by varietal, so it makes it easier to compare when you're in the mood for, say, a pinot noir. One thing worth mentioning, as we (hopefully) head toward the warmer months, is that, unlike other craft beer sellers in Victoria, we try to keep as much of our massive selection of domestic and imported craft beers CHILLED. Product Spotlight: Baird Beer

Baird doesn’t sound like a typically Japanese name for a beer, but this brewery is, in fact, located in Numazu, Japan. However, the man behind it, Bryan Baird, is actually from BC. So, his assortment of standard craft beer styles—we have the pale, amber and brown—have Japanese-inspired names, and the labels are (other than the beer name) entirely in Japanese. No idea as to how the availability will be in the future, so if you’re curious to try them, best not wait too long.

Product Spotlight: Caduceus & Arizona Stronghold

What do these two wineries—one from California and one from Arizona—have in common? Believe it or not, Tool vocalist Maynard James Keenan. Caduceus was his first endeavor into the wine world, but more recently, he and his partner in Arizona Stronghold, Eric Glomski, have been doing their best to establish Arizona of all places as a quality wine-growing region. They even made a movie about it, Blood Into Wine. We have limited quantities of a wine from each of Keenan's wineries.

Great Deal on a BIG Aussie Shiraz: 94 pts Wine Spectator!

As owner Glenn describes it, this Australian Barossa Shiraz from Schild Estate is a "massive fruit bomb." Wine Spectator magazine agreed, awarding it a whopping 94 points and naming it the 7th best wine of 2010!

There's no denying that Howe Sound Brewing has become a major force in the BC craft beer world. There are specialty shops in Seattle that are even stocking their brews now. So, it's about time we gave a little love to this Squamish brewpub/brewery, especially in light of their latest arrivals. The two seasonals you'll all probably know (and love), but the Rockfish Red Ale is a new one that's part of their Ales For Change series of limited edition beers that go to help various local causes. This one benefits Canadian Parks and Wilderness Society, with a $1 from every 1L bottle going toward it. Support a good cause, drink good beer. Can't beat that.

As brewmaster Jason Meyer says, “Cuvee D’Hiver is the closest we’ve come yet to being able to say we’ve brewed a beer that exhibits terroir.”

Product Spotlight: Phillips Brewing Goes Nuts!

Phillips isn't exactly shy about kicking out a new seasonal every month or so, but they've outdone themselves with the recent spate of new offerings. Probably the most notable is the Hop Box, which is a 12-pack featuring Hop Circle IPA, Grow Hop Centennial IPA, Krypton Rye PA and Skookum Cascadian Dark Ale. Prepare your taste buds for a good battering!

Another brand-new offering is their Hoperation Tripel Cross, a "Belgian IPA" that will take the place of Surly Blonde. Like Surly, it will be available in 650ml bombers.

The two latest seasonals (also available in 650ml bombers) are Double Dragon Imperial Red Ale and Ginger Ale.
